4K TV: Common questions answered

One of the biggest trends in televisions is the new 4K ultra-high definition model. Often called 4K Ultra HDTV, or 4K UHD for short, these new screens boast more life-like colors and a vivid picture to provide a more vibrant viewing experience that is a step up from traditional high-definition TVs (HDTV) and much improved over Full HD.

Why are 4K Ultra HDTVs better?

The main difference between 4K Ultra HDTV, HDTV and Full HD is the screen resolution; 4K TVs have the highest pixel count of the three. Pixels are tiny square-shaped graphic picture elements that are placed in a grid-like format that our eyes use to form a complete image.

Images appearing on 4K Ultra HDTV screens are smoother, more realistic and highly detailed because of the high number of pixels per square inch. More pixels per square inch translates into a better quality image, whether you’re looking at a television, photos taken on a digital camera or footage from a digital video recorder.

What's the difference between 4K Ultra HDTV, HDTV and Full HD?

  • 4K Ultra HDTV resolution measures 4096 x 2160 pixels
  • HDTV resolution measures 3840 x 2160 pixels
  • Full HD resolution measures 1920 x 1080 pixels

4K UHD screens contain four times the pixels of a Full HD screen. With more pixels per square inch, 4K UHD televisions provide the most vivid picture to date, regardless of where you are sitting or standing while viewing the screen.

Who makes 4K Ultra HDTVs?

Companies like Samsung, LG, Vizio, RCA and SCEPTRE are delivering 4K TVs to a store near you this year. A few are already on the market and are available at Walmart.

Is there 4K content to watch on a 4K Ultra HDTV?

Companies such as Comcast, Paramount, DIRECTV, Amazon and Netflix are developing content in 4K to maximize the capabilities of 4K Ultra HDTV screens with one of the first being Netflix’s “House of Cards” series. Since videos can also be shot in 4K Ultra HD, YouTube will also be getting in the mix as the year progresses.

Do I have to be in a certain place to watch a 4K Ultra HDTV?

The quality of the glass in 4K Ultra HDTVs provides a wide viewing angle and many options for viewing, whether you’re standing or sitting in front of the screen. And the most optimal viewing angle? Anywhere within the screen’s horizontal plane.

Is there special equipment required for 4K Ultra HDTVs?

Unlike 3D TVs that require the use of 3D glasses, 4K Ultra HDTVs don't require special equipment for viewing purposes, aside from the HDMI cables necessary to hook it up. Make sure you check that your TV is HDMI 2.0 compliant. This will not affect your HDMI cable selection but could easily cause issues with resolution of any 4K TV content.

Happy watching!
